Camping, Take 1: Tofino

We were so excited to reach camping season this year! Last year we didn't go at all because I was recovering from a C-section and we had a new born and a not-even-two year old.  We decided to start our season off by going to Tofino.  We figured that any hiccups could be solved by sandy beaches and Tacofino.

We camped at the Long Beach Campground right off the golf course.  The campground looked nice but upon closer inspection, we cannot in good conscience recommend anyone go here.  This was not a new campground, and yet there was only one bathroom and it was at the front office.  There were no outhouses or anything amongst all the campsites.  That meant that our campsite was far enough away that if our 2 year old had an emergency, we were too far to walk and not have an accident.  So we actually ended up driving to the bathroom a lot.  It was ridiculous.  Also, there was a lot of garbage in the surrounding bushes and even in some of the sites.  The owners obviously don't care very much about their grounds so I would recommend finding a different place.  The only good thing was that because it wasn't BC Parks, there was a nice soft ground to peg the tent into- not like the gravel that is often in BC Park campgrounds.

Like I said, this was our first camp trip as a family of four, and our first camp trip in 2 years so we were a little rusty.  We forgot all the things we said we needed to remember 2 years ago- like the big broom so I wouldn't have to crawl around sweeping out the tent.  K couldn't remember ever camping, so it seemed brand new to her.  She was soo excited she couldn't contain herself.  She was just bursting with enthusiasm.  Let me tell you -- that got old...fast! She didn't stay cute-excited very long; pretty quickly it turned into the annoying-crying-I'm-just-going-to-die-if-we-don't-do-everything-right-now kind of excited.

After we got set up, we took the girls to the beach for a bit before dinner.  They loved the sandy beaches and crashing waves.  Both girls immediately ran into them.  Poor B wiped out her first day and was hesitant in the water for the rest of the weekend (video HERE).  We had great weather and soaked up every bit of Tofino beach goodness.  That night we relaxed around camp, introduced K to her first (in memory) campfire and s'more and attempted our first night in the tent together with two kids.  K got her very own sleeping pad and sleeping bag and thought it was so cool.  B slept in the play pen.  Our bed was particularly comfortable this year with our new thick, warm, heavenly double sleeping bag.  I don't know what it is, but I have never been so comfortable camping!

The night was less than ideal.  K slept fairly soundly, although she did keep trying to get out of her sleeping bag (not knowingly, but I still had to wrestle with her because it was too cold for her to be rolling around the tent without it).  B was the real treat: she was up several times.  Cole and I were so tired and getting up out of a warm bed while camping is almost worse than getting up out of bed at home.  The night before camping the girls slept horribly so we were already tired and the lack of sleep in the tent was not helping our moods.  I think B may have been a tad cold.  Her head is not as full of hair as K so I think it was getting cold.  She was also getting over a yeast rash, and that was probably not helping.  Unfortunately, on top of everything else, they got up with the sun.  K was still so excited, she didn't want to remain in the tent, even though I brought toys to keep them occupied in the early morning so we wouldn't have to rush out of the tent.  It was a big struggle to keep K in the tent and eventually we all got up for breakfast.  We were feeling like maybe camping was not our favourite thing anymore and felt really disappointed.  Cole even threw a muffin angrily in the fire and said we should go home.  (He's a peach without proper sleep).

We persevered.  We headed out for lunch later that day, and the girls fell asleep in the car during the 8 minute drive to the Tacofino truck.  We decided to leave them sleeping and go get and eat lunch by ourselves (the taco truck is in a parking lot- so we could see the van the whole time). Wonderful, delicious Tacofino.  We were there during a professional surfing competition (on purpose- we like to watch) but this meant that the lunch line was longer than usual.  Probably took 40 minutes for us to get our food.  You know it's good when everyone is willing to pleasantly wait.  I've written about Tacofino before so I won't go into this time.  Suffice it to say, it was heavenly- and totally deserved after that terrible night.  I never take pictures of it because I'm too busy enjoying it.

The girls woke up, and we drove to Chesterman Beach.  It's outside Pacific Rim National Park so it does not incur the visitor's fee.  We had a lovely afternoon of sand and surf.  As always, the crows were ready to attack your picnic site as soon as you leave, no matter how well you've covered things.  Also, too bad I didn't get a picture of it, but Cole came prepared this season with a great little utility wagon to pull all the beach stuff, and B fit perfectly in the front.  Everyone we passed stopped and admired the cute baby in the wagon full of beach chairs, a cooler and toys.  It was seriously precious.

That night, things started to calm down.  The day at the beach seemed to cure everyone's bad moods.  Even K seemed calmer.  We put the girls to bed a little earlier, K even turned down her s'more.  Cole and I were so exhausted we didn't stay up much at all, we headed to bed pretty soon after the girls.  But everyone slept blissfully well.  B didn't make a sound, K stayed in her sleeping bag.  I added a sweater with a hood to B's PJs and that seemed to do the trick.  The day at the beach probably didn't hurt.  We slept so well, we all slept in (of course on the day we need to pack up).

Packing up took longer than expected.  But thankfully we were one of the only ones camping so checking out late went completely unnoticed.  We survived our camping trip- and mostly it was a good experience.  It was a great trial run and the magic of Tofino softened whatever grumpiness resulted from the learning curve.  We made a list of what worked and what didn't and were determined that our next camping trip, in two weeks, would be much smoother.  I also hoped that it was soon enough, K would remember what camping was and be less wound up because it wouldn't be new anymore.  We spent the afternoon at the beach watching some of the finals of the Rip Curl Surf Competition, enjoyed one more meal of Tacofino and then drove home, the girls asleep most of the way back.

A Summer's Day in May

Looks like summer to me!

Yesterday it got up to 27 degrees.  It was crazy- on May 14th! I'm not one who enjoys being hot, so I decided I was going to keep going all day.  I knew if I stopped, the heat would win and I would collapse on the couch and never get up.

First thing in the morning, we headed to Departure Bay Beach and played for a couple hours: collecting rocks, eating sand and running around.  It's a nice easy (as easy as anything can be pushing 2 kids), downhill, ocean-view walk from our house- less than a half hour.

K has started saying "cheese" during pictures
(has made taking pictures of her much easier)

dressed like it's summer

trying the local cuisine

It was so hot in the middle of the day, we spent the time at home.  The girls cooled off in the pool and I tidied up, worked out and made dinner.  The girls LOVED the little pool and spent lots of time in it.  Once B figured out how to get out, she spent most of the time hopping in and out of the pool over and over.  See video HERE.  I also finally took a video of her walking.  She took her first steps at 10 months and now at 11 months she walking all over the place.  Video HERE.

And just to make the day a little busier, we dried off, reapplied sunscreen (for like the fourth time), climbed back into the jogger, and headed off to Beban to check out the Farmer's Market and play at the park.  I planned both walks (to the beach and to the park) to coincide with Cole getting off a shift so he could pick us up, that way I only had to walk one way.

didn't make it to the park

this one could go all day

Needless to say, I was exhausted by the end of the day.  The girls weren't as tired as I had hoped.  K did pass out at noon in the car on the way home from the beach.  I thought that was a good sign but she still wanted more pool time after dinner.  B decided to end our day with a pool poop explosion so Cole got to hose down the pool and deck and I got to bathe the girls.  Not the end of the day I had been looking for, but what are you going to do?  K fell asleep almost right away but B was up crying for a good portion of the evening.  I ended up sitting on the couch nursing her for a good hour before I went to bed.  But that seemed to do it.  When I put her back to bed at 11pm, she was out till almost 8am- no sounds.  Thank goodness!! I definitely needed the sleep.

Mother's Day

My first Mother's Day as a mom of two.  I don't know about you, but I want for Mother's Day is to be the secondary caregiver (or no caregiver)....and I can't be the only one, right? Cole took the girls on Saturday to run errands while I went shopping for some summer stuff and a new Mother's Day outfit for church.  Shopping is by no means by favourite pass time, but anything without toddlers is enjoyable.  On Sunday, he got the girls ready for church and made me breakfast.  K coloured me a card but then took it back later that day thinking it was hers to keep colouring on.  I even managed to get a couple decent pictures with the girls before we left.

Cole also occupied both girls during third block so I could attend Relief Society in peace.  Lately K has been rejecting Nursery- not sure what that's about- so Cole had to spend the last hour in Nursery with both girls.  I was left alone that afternoon for quiet time/nap time and was able to read, write in my journal, talk to my mom and have a small nap.  It was lovely.  While I did that, Cole put away some laundry, cleaned up the mess the kids had made so far and when I got up he made dinner.

He always makes dinner on Mother's Day but this year he made and extra special effort to serve me something really nice that I would appreciate.  He grilled some flank steak and veggies and made fajitas.  He even made me pico de gallo.  Very sweet.  Very tasty.  We walked (K rode her bike) the girls to the park after dinner and played till bedtime (their bedtime).  Then Cole and I watched and movie and went to bed.  The girls' present to me that night was sleeping through the night.  We didn't hear anything from them till 7am the next morning.  Awesome present!

Easter

As Cole and I were away for most of the weekend in Seattle, our Easter consisted of dinner at my grandma's on Sunday night and an Easter Egg hunt on Monday morning.  K did well collecting her eggs and was very good about sharing with her sister and leaving some for her to find.  B found a few eggs and enjoyed the excitement.

Find videos here, here, here and here.

Thankfully, they are too young to know mommy and daddy abandoned them this holiday.  At least it wasn't Christmas :p

5 Years: Our Seattle Trip

Easter this year fell 4 days before our 5th anniversary so we took advantage of the long weekend and dropped the girls off at my parents' house for Fri/Sat/Sun and had a mini vacation in Seattle.  We left really early Friday morning and came back Sunday evening for a family Easter dinner at my grandparents' house.

The border line up could have been worse and in fact, was made a little better by the fact that we accidentally (truly) ended up in the nexus line and had to then jump into the regular line so we cut in and reduced our waiting time significantly.  It was a honest mistake- we followed the signs and the lane took us into the nexus line instead of to the back of the regular line.  Even after it happened we couldn't figure it out.

We did some shopping at the Tulalip outlets.  I hate shopping and avoid it at all costs.  But we had some things we actually needed so we thought we'd try to find some deals down South that we wouldn't find back home.  We were fairly successful.  I got a couple of maxi skirts (summer's yoga pants).  Cole got to gleefully make his way through the UnderArmour store..more than once.

Next, we spent some time in the temple book store, which we never really get to go to now that we have the Vancouver temple and it doesn't have a book store.  Now book shopping is more my speed!

Then we checked into our hotel, right near the Space Needle. I was over the moon about having 2 nights where I didn't need to listen out for kids.  My body completely shut down both nights and the sleep felt like 5 minutes.  It was the sleep of the dead.  I would probably need a year of sleep like that before feeling normal again.

We booked two activities, both for Saturday.  One was a 3 hour walking/tasting tour of Pike Place Market called Best Bites.  I highly recommend it.  It was very interesting history mixed with some super tasty bites.  Our tour guide, Marla, was excellent.  Tickets were $40/each.  Best bite was the chowder from Pike Place Chowder.  It was closed the next day for Easter, which devastated us because we wanted to go back for a proper portion.  But next time.  Best chowder of my life.  Their seafood bisque is also award winning.  Everything we ate was superb.  And as we were on the tour we took mental notes of the places we didn't get to eat at that we still wanted to try.  On Sunday, after we checked our of our hotel, we headed back to the market and had our own tour of the all bites we missed the day before.  My favourites (besides the chowder) were the yogurt stand (will blow your mind), the greek place (don't remember the name), Beecher's mac n cheese, Saffron Spice and Taste (the museum restaurant that is almost all organic/local).  The olive oil/balsamic vinegar tasting bar was probably the more surprising and interesting, though.  If we had a bigger budget for souvenirs, I for sure would have spent some there.  Worth a trip.

I was supremely jealous of the fresh farm dairy, produce and flowers available at Pike Place.  Would love to have a large farmer's market like that to frequent.

Our second activity was a couple's massage at Ananya Spa downtown.  It was a full hour but felt like so much less.  Perfectly timed after a 3 hour walking tour, too.  From what I saw of the services while waiting for the massage and then the massage itself, I would have no problem recommending this spa.

Our dining experiences were divine.  Friday night, we ate at Il Bistro (attached to Pike Place).  It's super popular, and even with reservations there's a bit of a wait.  It's a very romantic restaurant if you're not near a loud, drunk group like we were.  A tad dark for my taste- but the service and food was excellent.  Cole had a seafood linguine dish and I had a melt-in-your-mouth beef tenderloin.  The dessert was lovely, as well.  Saturday night was considerable less expensive (like our whole dinner didn't even reach the cost of one of our entrees at Il Bistro).  It was this shack on the side of the road outside of downtown.  The beauty of the internet is now those places can be found by the tourists.  It was really busy and we just got in front of the dinner rush so that was lucky.  There's a few picnic tables beside it.  Paseo serves Carribean fare, the most popular being their delicious slow roasted pork sandwiches.  Giant, oozing with flavour and under $9.  Best meat sandwich we've ever had- side of the road or otherwise.  Felt like my own Guy Fieri.

It was a lovely trip and a nice vacation from our kids.  Super grateful to my family for watching them all weekend.  Becca slept beautifully for them- almost 12/hrs straight.  She's NEVER done that for me.

It was nice to be back in the city where we married for our celebration of 5 years.  It has been an incredibly busy 5 years- it was good to take a couple days to enjoy some peace.

We did take some pictures of our tour, but that's about it, which is so like us:

Pike Place market (Il Bistro is the windows on the far right)

our tour started with a story about the price of onions back in the day
and how the market got started

our bite: banana, almond, nutella crepes

best chowder in the country (many many awards to prove it)

best yogurt of my life

enviable produce

if you like indian food, you'll love this place
(even Cole enjoyed it and he doesn't like indian food)

famous gum wall

Cole adding his own piece

Uli's Sausage (no preservatives or fillers)

such an interesting experience- worth a visit

not your average museum restaurant (organic, local, delicious)
